World Bicycle Day, 3 June

Bicycling is an excellent activity for exercise regardless of duration. It can also provide good transportation for those unable to purchase or drive a vehicle, and does not cause air pollution or congestion. Safe and supported bicycle use is key for sustainable development and economic growth.

This Day follows the Sustainable Development Goals of 1 (No Poverty), 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Action).

The Abu Dhabi Sports Council has scheduled a 10 km Bike Run at the Abu Dhabi Cycling Club in Al Hudayriat Island, with a focus on children and junior age groups.

World Environment Day, 5 June

2024’s Environment Day will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, to be hosted in Riyadh in December 2024. This Day is to take note of the over 40% of the earth’s land being affected, in turn affecting half the world population.

This Day follows the Sustainable Development Goals of 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), 15 (Life on Land), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

World Ocean Day, 8 June

Oceans cover over 70% of the earth, providing 50% of its oxygen, and supporting over 40 million people by 2030. Yet its fish and coral networks are under constant threat of destruction. This Day is to remind people to be more sustainable and cautious with this immense biome.

This Day follows the Sustainable Development Goals of 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities),12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
