Hiroshima Day, 6 August
Nagasaki Day, 9 August
International Day against Nuclear Tests, 29 August
“I made one great mistake in my life, when I signed a letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made."
Albert Einstein. Recounted by Linus Pauling in a July 28, 1969, letter to Ronald W. Clark. November 16, 1954
Connected to the month’s earlier Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days on their nuclear bombings, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests in 2009, bringing to attention “the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The day is observed through many activities and governmental and civil actions.
The fact that there are still states that insist on keeping or seeking to develop nuclear arms; makes the remembrance of these days even more relevant.
This World Day follows the Sustainable Development Goals 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals).
