World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, 17 June
Declared on June 17th 1994 by the United Nations, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought recognizes an environmental danger from human activity and climate change. It is the degrading of dryland ecosystems that may make the land unusable in the future, including unsustainable actions like deforestation. Two billion people live in such ecosystems, 90% in developing countries, and desertification may affect 50 million people in the next 10 years. Tree restoration and water management are some ways to help combat this.
The World Day addresses the Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land).
